Universal Knowledge Synthesizer: Building Multi-Modal Knowledge Integration
The story of building an advanced knowledge integration system. Python backend, React frontend, and the quest to synthesize information across domains.
What if you could take information from any source—documents, code, conversations, media—and synthesize it into a unified, queryable knowledge base?
This is the Universal Knowledge Synthesizer.
The Vision
Modern knowledge work involves:
- Documents in multiple formats
- Code across many repositories
- Conversations in various platforms
- Media files containing visual information
- Notes scattered across tools
None of these connect to each other automatically.
We built a system to synthesize all of it.

Key Features
MCP Agentic Workflow Unlocker
The synthesizer integrates with MCP servers to:
- Auto-discover available MCP capabilities
- Route queries to appropriate tools
- Compose multi-tool workflows
Multi-Modal Content Synthesis
Process and integrate:
- Text documents: PDF, Word, Markdown, plain text
- Code files: Any programming language
- Structured data: JSON, CSV, databases
- Media: Images (with OCR), videos (with transcription)
Knowledge Graph Construction
Automatically build relationship maps:
- Entity extraction from all content types
- Semantic similarity connections
- Temporal relationships (what happened before/after)
- Citation and reference tracking
TUI-Based Knowledge Interaction
A rich terminal interface for:
- Quick queries without leaving the terminal
- Visual graph exploration
- Relationship navigation
- Real-time updates
Technical Deep Dive
Ingestion Pipeline
class KnowledgeIngester:
def __init__(self):
self.parsers = {
'md': MarkdownParser(),
'pdf': PDFParser(),
'code': UniversalCodeParser(),
'json': StructuredDataParser(),
'image': VisionParser(),
}
def ingest(self, path: Path) -> KnowledgeChunk:
parser = self.get_parser(path.suffix)
raw_content = parser.extract(path)
entities = self.entity_extractor(raw_content)
embeddings = self.embed(raw_content)
return KnowledgeChunk(
content=raw_content,
entities=entities,
embeddings=embeddings,
relationships=self.find_relationships(entities)
)Relationship Discovery
The system uses multiple strategies:
- Explicit references: Links, citations, imports
- Semantic similarity: Embedding-based matching
- Entity co-occurrence: Shared concepts across documents
- Temporal proximity: Created/modified around same time
Query Processing
Queries flow through:
- Intent classification: What type of answer is needed?
- Entity extraction: What concepts are relevant?
- Graph traversal: Find connected information
- Synthesis: Combine into coherent response

# Query the knowledge base
from knowledge_engine import KnowledgeClient
client = KnowledgeClient()
results = client.query(
"What patterns exist across our debugging sessions?",
include_sources=True,
max_hops=3
)
for result in results:
print(f"{result.summary}")
print(f" Sources: {result.source_count}")
print(f" Confidence: {result.confidence:.2%}")Use Cases
1. Project Context Building
When starting on a new codebase:
- Ingest all documentation
- Index code structure
- Map relationships between components
- Query: “How does authentication flow work?”
2. Research Synthesis
Across multiple papers and sources:
- Ingest all research materials
- Extract key concepts and claims
- Find contradictions and agreements
- Generate synthesis reports
3. Debugging Context
Combine multiple information sources:
- Error logs
- Recent code changes
- Similar past issues
- Documentation updates
4. Onboarding Acceleration
For new team members:
- Index all project knowledge
- Create navigable learning paths
- Answer contextual questions
- Surface relevant examples
Performance Characteristics
| Operation | Latency | Throughput |
|---|---|---|
| Document Ingestion | 500ms avg | 100+ docs/min |
| Query Processing | 200ms avg | 50+ queries/sec |
| Graph Update | 50ms avg | Real-time capable |
| Relationship Discovery | 1s avg | Background processing |
Memory efficient: Streaming processing prevents memory exhaustion on large corpuses.
Lessons Learned
1. Schema Flexibility Matters
Knowledge doesn’t fit rigid schemas. The system must adapt to whatever content structure appears.
2. Relationships Are the Value
Raw content is searchable anywhere. The unique value is in synthesized relationships that only emerge from combining sources.
3. Incremental Updates Are Essential
Full reprocessing doesn’t scale. The system must handle incremental updates efficiently.
4. User Interface Is Critical
The most sophisticated backend is useless if users can’t effectively query it. We invested heavily in the TUI and query interfaces.
Future Directions
Active Learning
- Learn from user feedback on query relevance
- Improve relationship weighting based on usage
Multi-Agent Collaboration
- Share knowledge bases across agent teams
- Collaborative annotation and curation
Real-Time Streaming
- Process conversations and activities live
- Immediate knowledge integration
